Advanced Therapeutic Medicinal Products (ATMP) is an elective compulsory course that focuses on how to improve patients' lives by using viruses. The course is connected to the Institute for Applied Biotechnology (IAB) at Biberach University, which focuses on biotechnological research and development. The IAB's core competence is the manufacturing process for biopharmaceuticals and industrial biotechnology products. The course covers what ATMPs are and their differences from 'classical' biologics, new therapeutic modalities in the market, viruses as therapies in oncology or hereditary disease, virus replication cycle and the role of the immune system, development of manufacturing processes for therapeutic viruses, methods to analyze whole viruses for infectivity and safety, and formulation development of viruses for therapy. The institute's laboratories enable the complete biotechnological manufacturing process from cell line establishment to protein analysis. Note: The English-taught course offering is tentative, with the final overview available one month prior to the beginning of the semester.
