📋 Program Hakkında

The English-language Master in Chinese Studies offers a comprehensive programme of postgraduate instruction for students with a BA in Chinese Studies as well as graduates from the humanities and social sciences with appropriate language skills in Modern Chinese. In the master's programme, you will learn to reflect on issues related to China based on the principles of theories and methods drawn from philology, history, cultural studies, humanities and social sciences and to then work on these independently at a high academic level. For this purpose, you will expand your language proficiency and your knowledge of Chinese cultures and societies. Focusing on religions and literature as well as economic and social history, teaching and research in Leipzig pay equal attention to China's traditions and to their ruptures and continuities in the present day. The program includes four compulsory elective modules (Religion, Social history, Knowledge cultures, Cultural history, Global history), two language modules (Advanced Chinese, Advanced reading comprehension), two academic practice seminars, and one research internship. The history of the Leipzig Sinology Institute began in 1878, when the first sinological professorship in Germany was established in Leipzig. Research and teaching from 1878 to the present trace the development from a philologically and ethnologically oriented science to today's sinology.

* Minimum degree required: A first academic degree (bachelor's) or a degree from a state or state-recognised university of cooperative education, typically in Chinese studies but not required if other requirements are met * Non-academic requirements: Academic aptitude test (Eignungsfeststellungsprüfung) required * Additional requirements: Certificate of higher education entrance qualification according to §17 SächsHSG or equivalent * Interview: In most cases, an additional interview will be conducted * Language requirements: English at B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference, Chinese at HSK-5 level * Recommended: Knowledge of classical Chinese equivalent to two semesters

* English: B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, documented by an internationally recognized test certificate such as TOEFL or IELTS * Standard Chinese: Level 5 of the new HSK examination (Xin Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi of 2010) or equivalent proof in spoken and written form * Premodern Chinese: At least two semesters with exams or four teaching hours per week, must be proven at the latest when registering the master's thesis
