📋 Program Hakkında

The Master's program in Popular Cultures offers a research-oriented study with a focus on text, image, and media studies. The program, which relates to both contemporary and historical aspects, focuses on the dissemination of popular cultural artifacts, especially in the modern era, but also traces popularization effects back to the pre-modern era. Students first acquire basic theoretical, methodological, and application-oriented knowledge for dealing with popular cultures in history and the present. Later, courses are added that focus on popular cultural representations and performances, e.g., the reception of (canonical) art and literature in popular media, phenomena of everyday/popular cultures in public spaces, popular and populism in language and communication, popular film genres and TV formats, star culture, or crime literature. For practical orientation, students can choose courses from cultural practitioners (publishing, newspaper, theater, creative writing courses), but also attend internships and excursions as well as project-oriented events.

* Bachelor's degree in one of the participating subjects or related subjects (at least 50% or 70 LP) * German and English language skills at level B2 according to CEFR * For some courses, e.g., from Romance studies, additional (passive) language skills may be necessary, but these are not admission requirements
