The research group CIRCLE (Circular Economy and Life Cycle Engineering) focuses on designing and evaluating technical systems, products, and value chains to solve key sustainability problems. Their goal is to create scientifically sound, quantifiable, and application-oriented foundations for technical design that combines ecological sustainability, economic feasibility, and social responsibility. Research focuses on strategies for Circular Economy and Life Cycle Engineering, operationalized through method development, system modeling, and data-based sustainability assessment. Key research areas include: computer-supported models for transparent and accessible life cycle assessments, life cycle engineering for decision support, evaluation of circular strategies at product, production, and system levels, systemic sustainability analyses of technical transformation paths, and sustainable circular production systems. The institute INSYS at THWS is characterized by interdisciplinary and application-oriented research, aiming to contribute to the technical, economic, and socio-economic implementation of the energy transition and climate-neutral, sustainable energy technology.
