Computational linguistics explores how computers might be used to automatically process and interpret human language. Research in this area considers the mathematical and logical characteristics of natural language, and develops algorithms and statistical processes for automatic language processing. The Master's degree programme in Computational Linguistics at Heidelberg University covers topics including computer science and programming, theoretical and empirical foundations for formal statistical language modelling, and algorithms in computational linguistics. The program allows students to develop a research-orientated or application-orientated specialism, or combine computational linguistics with a minor subject. The academic course includes modules from various subdisciplines: theoretical computational linguistics, applied computational linguistics, formal linguistics, and applied linguistics. Special features include early involvement in research at the Institute, compulsory programming courses, software projects, and work placements. The Institute maintains cooperation agreements with research institutes in the region and has strong connections with related institutes within the University, including the Institute for Computer Science.
