📋 Program Hakkında
In Religious Studies, we examine religions, spirituality, and related social phenomena from a cultural studies perspective, investigating their meaning to individuals and societies. The program teaches a range of theories and methods for analyzing the social realities of religions and their actors, focusing on religious ideas, rituals, material expressions, and their interactions with society. The Institute for Religious Studies in Heidelberg emphasizes a close link between research and teaching, allowing students to pursue their own areas of interest. In addition to theoretical foundations, students acquire language skills and methodological competence. Areas of focus include: study of regional histories of religion and contemporary religion in Europe, Japan, and the USA; current religious developments; mindfulness, psychotherapy, popular culture, and museums as sites of self-cultivation; technology, artificial intelligence, environmental movements; future visions like transhumanism and space colonization; and astrology and modern spiritualities. The theoretical foundation is based on the notion that religion is experienced sensually through rituals, objects, and bodily practices, with 'Material Religion' as a key approach.
