Classical Indology deals with cultural and religious history. The main focus in teaching and research is on the classical languages, cultures and religions, and literatures and philosophies of South Asia with a special emphasis on Sanskrit. The major languages required are Sanskrit and Pali. Students can also learn modern languages such as Nepali, Singhalese, Bengali, Hindi, Tamil, Urdu, and Tibetan. The program features an ethno-Indological orientation, combining historical text analysis with field trips in South Asia. Research focuses on rituals and festivals, temple traditions, local sciences, gender and religion, Buddhist law, inter-religious debates, and historical sources of Nepal. Regional foci in field research include South India, Nepal, Benares, and Sri Lanka. This program aims to enable students to conceive and phrase research questions in the field of Cultural and Religious History of South Asia and work them out using scientific methods. During the Master's program, students acquire comprehensive knowledge of the subject area, especially the methodological and theoretical foundations of Ethno-indology. The focus on Sanskrit facilitates the study and interpretative analyses of primary sources with the methods of philology and comparative linguistics and situates them in their historical contexts as also their later receptions.
✅ Giriş / Kabul Koşulları
* Above-average bachelor's degree in South Asian studies or an equivalent humanities degree
* Proof of knowledge of Sanskrit, equivalent to at least four semester study of the language in a university or equivalent level institution
* The admission committee may conduct a test to ascertain the adequate level of knowledge of Sanskrit language
