The master's program in Internet security at the Gelsenkirchen campus of the Westphalian University offers graduates of a bachelor's degree in Informatics with an interest in IT security the opportunity to learn and develop sophisticated IT security technologies, concepts and architectures. The program combines compulsory modules that deepen the foundations of computer science and expand them with specific knowledge in cyber security. It also includes interdisciplinary specializations in areas such as data protection, ethics, and higher stochastics. Students can set individual focal points through a wide range of elective modules. The practice-oriented project modules promote interdisciplinary key qualifications like planning and organization, communication, and conflict resolution. Current topics and methods from application-oriented IT security research are covered, and students learn to implement and control work processes independently. The program concludes with a master's thesis and colloquium. The program has a strong connection to the Institute for Internet Security (if(is)), founded in 2005, which focuses on application-oriented internet security research. Research areas include blockchain, threat intelligence, artificial intelligence, data protection, web security, and IoT.
